Mechanical Design Engineer – Year Placement

Who you are
- An Engineering student looking for a year in industry placement, who has an active interest in product design and development and a desire to learn and develop new engineering skills.
- Is creative, and excited to explore new ideas and technologies.
- Has a foundation in engineering theory with the ability to apply knowledge to practical problems.
- Openly embraces new ideas, change and mentoring from senior team members and is engaged in their own personal development.
What you’ll do
The successful applicant will be placed within the New Product Development team (NPD), to gain hands-on experience in designing products. During the placement the engineering intern will carry out multiple placements between 3-6 months each, around the various product and advanced development categories. Collaborating with senior engineers in each field to complete a variety of design and development tasks in line with business needs and project timelines. Working within the dedicated design project teams will give you detailed insight into the design process and working in the various categories will give you a rounded appreciation of multiple product types.
Key responsibilities include:
- Creation and execution of engineering solutions using theory and practical problem solving
- Evaluation and testing of design solutions and products, producing reports on findings
- Ownership and delivery of assigned work packages to a high quality and on time
- Participation in project reviews, using communication skills to effectively convey information
- Liaise with supporting teams around the business to ensure project needs and are met
- Work with manufacturing and supply chain to ensure design requirements are met
- Evaluate and solve field problems, working with dedicated warranty engineers
- Research of relevant technical developments in line with innovation strategy
- Extra-curricular activities could include involvement with school STEAM initiatives, charity volunteer days and the opportunity to join Kohler Business Resource Groups such as Kohler Proud.
Skills/Requirements
- Good written and verbal communication
- Creative approach to problem solving
- Able to self-motivate, work on own initiative and work well with a multi-disciplinary team
- Proficiency in MS office suite
- Good level of 3D modeling proficiency and able to generate 2D drawings to BS8888
- Understanding of prototyping methods, materials, DFMA, FMEA and analysis tools
