Meet new Semper Forward team member, Jonathan Ross

Jonathan Ross,
Military Talent Attraction
Manager – North Dakota

The Semper Forward team extends the warmest of welcomes to Jonathan Ross, military attraction manager for North Dakota, our newest state partner.

Jonathan is a proud Army veteran and recent graduate of North Dakota State University’s Master of Public Policy program. His academic focus was on veteran suicide prevention policy, a subject deeply personal to him: “I am passionate about using my knowledge and experience to make a positive impact on the lives of veterans and their families.”

In addition to his new role helping ease the transition for those going from service member to veteran in the state of North Dakota, Jonathan is also actively involved in his community. He serves on the executive board of North Dakota Protection and Advocacy, which is focused on advocating for disabled and underserved veterans. Additionally, he serves with North Dakota Cares, further demonstrating his commitment to helping veterans in need.

Outside of work, he cherishes time with his wife and three children.

“It’s a balancing act, but I find fulfillment in creating lasting memories with my family,” he says.

We asked Jonathan to share a little more about his new position, his commitment to serving fellow veterans and transitioning military personnel, and what makes North Dakota “Legendary.”

What excites you most about this new position?

What excites me most about this new position is the opportunity to directly contribute to the well-being of veterans in North Dakota. Transitioning out of the service is a daunting task. I remember when I transitioned out of the service, I often felt lost on what I needed to do next. This position allows me to ease the transition for those who are going from service member to veteran. This position also allows me to promote the Legendary State of North Dakota, the place I now call home.

Why are you called to work with veterans/transitioning military members?

I feel a strong calling to work with veterans and transitioning military members due to my own experiences and the unique challenges they face. Having served in the military myself, I understand firsthand the sacrifices made and the adjustments required when returning to civilian life. I’m passionate about helping others navigate this transition, providing support, and ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed. Not only is transitioning a dauting task, but it is also at this point where most veterans die by suicide. If I can ease this transition and provide a warm handoff to employers, CVSOs, and our community champions, I can potentially save a life. This is a calling, a mission, and a purpose that drives me to make a positive impact on the lives of veterans.

What do you love about North Dakota?

I love North Dakota due to its being a great place to raise a family. North Dakota has great schools, low crime, and no traffic. It’s a place that has it all and won’t break the bank with its low cost of living and great wages. North Dakota offers great outdoor activities, from hiking along the Red River to local ice-skating rinks, where I can spend quality time with my family. The term ‘North Dakota Nice’ is often used to describe the community we live in. North Dakotans work hard and play hard. Go Bison!”

Why should veterans consider North Dakota for their next mission?

North Dakota offers a unique blend of opportunity and community for veterans seeking their next mission. As a veteran myself, I can attest to the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. North Dakota offers a supportive environment that can ease this transition. The state’s commitment to veterans is evident in its various programs and initiatives. Veterans can find fulfilling careers through job training and placement services, attain affordable housing, and access quality healthcare. Additionally, North Dakota’s low crime rate, great schools, and affordable cost of living make it an ideal place to raise a family. With its stunning natural beauty and a wide range of outdoor activities, North Dakota offers a high quality of life for veterans and their families.

What else do you want others to know about North Dakota?

Whether it’s cheering on the Bison at the Fargo Dome, snowshoeing in the Badlands, going to the State Fair, fishing in our many lakes, or duck hunting and camping in the tallgrass prairie, North Dakota is the only state where you can truly Be Legendary.
